From Coach David Salinas: what a way to start the season. I can't say enough about this group of kids. They had a goal to win this tournament their senior year and they did it with a lot of determination and great teamwork. This marks the first time that a class 3A team has ever won this tournament and it was exactly 8 years ago that a team led by Tidy Castillo reached the finals to play CC King but due to rain the teams shared a co-championship. Lost in all the jubilation is Mike Gonzalez hitting streak reached 25 and Brian's regular season win streak continues at 11. Well, our Jerseys made quite an impression on the big boys from CC and now take their act to the valley for a 7 p.m. game at Edcouch Elsa Monday and then Friday at the Mercedes KC Tournament versus Harlingen at 1 p.m.

From Coach David Salinas: It was another great road win for our ball club which is playing pretty solid right now. On a sad note, Mike Gonzalez 25-game hit streak came to an end as EE 2nd basemen caught Mike's line drive in the seventh. I think we all now have a great appreciation for what Joe Dimaggio's 56-game hit streak stood for. Hey, what can I say "25 out of 26 ain't bad mike". Let's start a new one!
Jerseys play at the Mercedes KC Tournament on Friday at 1 p.m. versus Harlingen. Teams in the tournament are Mercedes, La Feria, Rio Hondo, Los Fresnos, Edinburg ECO., Harlingen South, and Harlingen.

From the Coach: Jerseys claim 3rd Championship. This marks the first time any of my teams has done this before. One of the best things that came out of this tournament was our ball club was reminded that anyone can beat you on any given day and Aransas Pass reminded us of this. On the other hand, we learned alot about this team, as they responded to the loss with 2 big 10 run rule wins. Making the All Tourney Team were Mark Cates, Josh Cosby, Mike Gonzalez, Ruben Mejia, and Brian Boerjan. Mike Gonzalez hit streak continues at 34 of 35 games and Brian's win streak is at 15. Jerseys roll to a 13 -1 record before they face Sinton on Wednesday in Fal at 7:00 p.m. Should be a great early showdown!

Pre-Season #15
Wednesday 3/14/01 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 R H E
Sinton 0 0 4 0 0 3 0 7 11 0
Falfurrias Jerseys 0 0 1 1 0 0 0 2 4 2

Losing Pitcher: Mike Gonzalez 2-1, Josh Cosby in relief in the 5th.
Leading Hitters: Keoki Guerra 1-2; Mike Gonzalez 1-3; Ruben Mejia 1-3; David Vela 1-2.

From the Coach: They say baseball is a game of hitting it where they ain't. Well, we just did the opposite and Sinton had the right formula and they played great defense which included turning three double plays. On a good note, Mike Gonzalez hit streak continues. Well, the Jersey travel to Alice on Friday for a 4:00 game which will conclude a very successful non-district season.

Pre-Season #16
Thursday 3/16/01 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9  R H E
Falfurrias Jerseys 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 4 9 2
Alice Coyotes 0 2 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 3 8 2

Winning Pitcher: Brian Boerjan 6-0, 8 k's
Leading Hitters: Mark Cates 1-4, 1 winning rbi; Tom Villarreal 1-4; Keoki Guerra 1-3; Mike Gonzalez 1-4, 1 rbi; Ruben Mejia 2-4, 1 rbi; Charlie Silva 1-4, 1 rbi; Carlos Villarreal 1-2; Trey Garcia 1-4.

From the Coach: Jerseys got out to a fast start and then hung on for a thrilling 4-3 win. Both teams had their chances from the 5th inning on but great pitching and defense created the extra innings. The highlight of the night was in the 7th when the coyotes had the bases loaded with no outs , the fourth batter Jason Villarreal flied out to 2nd base and then with one out and the infield in and outfielders playing in to prevent the winning run from scoring, coyote hitter Raul Guerra hits a liner that Carlos Villarreal had to back peddle for and then throw a strike at home plate to nail Justin Findley for the inning ending double play.
This was a great win for our kids after Wednesday's disappointing loss to Sinton. We are feeling pretty good going into Tuesday's district opener in San Diego. Both our streaks continue tonight with Mike getting another hit and Brian winning his 6th and 16th in a row. Jerseys move to 14-2 and are looking for their 6th district title in a row.
