From Coach David Salinas:
Mr. Pulido, here we go again. Our first scrimmage against La Joya gave us coaches a look at a lot of new players and old veterans. The La Joya scrimmage score was 11-5 in La Joya's favor. Brian Boerjan pitched two innings allowing no runs on 2 hits with 2 k's. Carlos Villarreal had 4 k's while allowing only 4 unearned runs on 1 hit. Josh Cosby had no k's and allowed 3 hits and gave up 4 runs. Mike Gonzales gave up 3 runs on 4 hits.
Over all we saw some good things and we are going to learn from our mistakes. On the offensive side of game we had 5 runs on 7 hits. Keoki Guerra was 1-3, Carlos Villarreal was 2-3 with a double, Mike Gonzales was 2-4 with 3 rbi's, and Ruben Mejia was 2-3 with a double and 2 rbi's. On defense we made 4 errors while La Joya had 1.

Jerseys travel to Kingsville Saturday for a 2:00 scrimmage.
Note: Mark Cates is recovering well from shoulder surgery. He is expected back in the middle of March. Brian Boerjan's rehab went well on his pitching hand as his first outing showed.

From Coach David Salinas:
Mr. Pulido, The fighting Jerseys got back to basic fundamentals after the La Joya scrimmage and the result was more Jersey-like. The Jerseys were successful with a 13-2 eight inning scrimmage victory over Kingsville. The pitching of Brian Boerjan, Jaime Ruelas, Josh Cosby, Mike Gonzales, and Carlos Villarreal held the Brahmas in check. The staff allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, struck out 11 and walked 6 in eight innings. On defense, we had 4 errors but the play of Carlos Villarreal at shortstop showed a lot of promise. On offense, we had 13 runs on 14 hits with 9 walks and 7 k's. Our leading hitters were Charlie Silva 3-4, Josh Cosby 2-2, and Tommy Villarreal 3-3. In conclusion, we saw Jaime Ruelas being successful on the mound. We saw our hitting improve tremendously from Tuesdays scrimmage, and our young players improved after their first scrimmage. All in all our Jerseys responded just like we expected them to.

Jerseys travel to PSJA North for a tri-scrimmage with host PSJA North and McAllen Niki Rowe. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Mr. Pulido, the best way to describe Saturday's scrimmages is by saying, "it's not how you start that's important but how you end." The Jerseys took it on the chin on the first scrimmage in which Robstown pitchers no-hit the Jerseys and allowed only 1 run versus their 6. But in the night-cap Fal came back in true Jersey fashion and responded to the challenge the coaching staff gave the team by beating Niki Rowe 9-2. Niki Rowe had previously beat Robstown 4-0. The bottom line is our kids got to see some good competition this scrimmage season and are well prepared to take on this tough non-district schedule.
