2005 Regional Finals Box Scores

Regional Final game 1 of 3
- 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9  R H E
Falfurrias Jerseys 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 - - 1 2 2
Yoakum 0 3 0 0 0 0 x - - 3 5 0

Losing Pitcher: Danny Duarte 6-2.
Leading Hitters: Zeke Lopez 2b - rbi, Milan Guerra 1-3.
Comments: The game plan was simple; don't give them extra outs and take advantage of every runner you get on base. We were facing the best pitcher probably in class 3A. Riley Boening is UT Austin number one recruit and he showed us why. All Yoakum needed tonight was our first error and then they relied on Boening. We had him on the ropes in the first but he adjusted nicely and we couldn't figure him out. Game one is down but our kids won't quit. They'll come back tomorrow and give it their best effort. Tonight marks our first loss to a 3A team and our never-been-shutout streak continues.

Regional Final game 2 of 3
- 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9  R H E
Yoakum 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 - - 2 10 4
Falfurrias Jerseys 1 0 5 0 0 1 x - - 7 7 0

Winning Pitcher: Santana Mejia 5-0
Leading Hitters: jason garcia 1-3, danny duarte 1-4, Santana Mejia 1-4, Zeke Lopez 1-3, Milan Guerra 1-4, Juan Carlos Garcia 1-3.
Comments: It was lose and go home. Our kids showed a lot of character in coming into this game with a lot of emotion and energy. Santana Mejia pitched well and our luck changed as Yoakum became the team to make the errors and we were the team getting the big hits. Now we felt we were in good shape. We felt going into the series that we had more pitching depth than Yoakum did. We were to find out and I wouldn't be surprised if game 3 would be a high scoring game.

Regional Final game 3 of 3
- 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9  R H E
Falfurrias Jerseys 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 - - 1 7 3
Yoakum 0 1 0 0 3 0 x - - 4 4 0

Losing Pitcher: Ruben Cisneros 3-1, Gilbert Vela came in the 5th with two outs, Jason Garcia pitched the 6th.
Leading Hitters: Jason Garcia 1-4, Danny Duarte 3-4, Ruben Cisneros 1-3, Mario Ramirez 2-3.
Comments: Winner take all was the message our kids told themselves. Game 3 turned out to be the opposite of what I thought it was supposed to be. It was a well pitched game by all pitchers involved on both teams. Ruben kept us in the game but we made a couple errors that gave them the momentum they needed and we couldn't catch a break. In the end our favorite quote hit home — Defense wins Championships.

Yoakum played better defense overall in the series and that's why they won. Congratulations to Yoakum, and all I can say is you deserve it because you beat a pretty good team. A team that had not lost to any 3A school and had never been shut out, never lost two games in a row and had the third best record with 26 wins. The '93 team had 27 and the '91 team had 29. So all in all we had a great year. We rode this wave all we could and have nothing to be ashamed of. We proved the experts wrong. They said we didn't have the pitching to get far in the playoffs. We not only had the pitching, we developed some depth with 8 pitchers throwing this year to leave us well prepared for the future. I would like to take this time to thank the Fab Five. My five seniors who have been with me for 4 years. These kids were baseball players. They had old school and new school in them and the end product was very successful. It has been a long time since we had this type of leadership. I would like to thank them personally for being there for me when I needed someone to stand up for me. They never let me down and I hope I returned the favor. I will remember the family atmosphere they created. They brought back the fun in coaching for me. They reminded me why I joined this profession.

I would like to also thank my coaching staff who day after day pushed these kids to be the best they could be. For my side kick, Sandy, all I can say is thanks and this one was fun. I know what you are going through my friend, it is not easy to say good bye to your son's playing days and especially when it ended so close to going to the show. All I can say is time will heal you and believe me, Milan will always be around just like my son has been. There will be a little of each of them in the kids we coach in the future. We will be reminded and we will smile and think about the great team we had in 2005. So to Santana Mejia, Danny Duarte, Zeke Lopez, Juan Carlos Garcia, and Milan Guerra, you now join the big Jersey Alumni Family and your accomplishments will go down in Jersey Baseball history. Thanks for the ride, it really was a lot of fun. To the underclassmen, we got a lot of work to do but we'll get it done because Jersey Baseball is a tradition that doesn't graduate. To our fans you were the best. When our opponents have to take noise makers away from you, that's what I call intimidation. It seems like just yesterday we just started to give equipment to our kids and now 4 months later it's time to hang'em up.

To Mr. Eddie Pulido I say thank you again. You continue to improve an already great web page. Thanks for all you do to promote our program.

Well, the long wait is the hardest part of ending a season, so until then, remember the sun will rise again tomorrow and Jersey Baseball will also shine just as brightly tomorrow. It is not about how long the journey was, it's about who you traveled it with and what you experienced together that matters. I just traveled 4 months with a great bunch of young men and coaches and I experienced a life time of memories that very few have ever experienced and for that I thank God because with God all things are possible!

Congratulations Fightin' Jerseys - 2005 Region IV Finalists.

Keep 'em swinging and don't forget to touch 'em all,

proud and honored,
Coach David C. Salinas
